About the New Dawn Middle School

The New Dawn Middle School (NDMS) was founded in 2004 to serve the Maya people of Copal AA La Esperanza and the surrounding region.

NDMS helps students maintain their cultural identity by providing an affordable alternative to boarding schools (which have historically ignored or denigrated Maya culture and history).

NDMS seeks to create strong leaders who can face contemporary problems while remaining rooted in their own traditions.

The current mayor of Copal AA is a graduate of the school, as are many members of the town council and most of the teachers. Graduates of the school have also gone on to become health workers and agronomists.
